the social has come full circle
it’s interesting how much the social networking scene has come around back to it’s roots..
in my formative years, i discovered things such IRC and hotline. places where people could chat and transfer files
back and forth to each other.. both where pretty much node based and had their own protocols for doing things.
oh, and they were fairly private, from what i could tell.
years later, people who weren’t in the know were given easier ways to do this at the cost of their privacy.
of course, you can always “set your privacy” to however you want, but really…. in the terms of agreement..
they have all right to do whatever with your stuff.
even companies such as google…a company that can do no wrong.. is trying to literally store the entire universe.
sure, they’re not planning on making money off of this stuff.. but clearly, this can be used to some end in a manner
most nefarious… again, not saying they would. but it can happen. they have your data.
people are starting to see what’s happening to their data.. or at least what can happen to their stuff should something
happen to the companies who host their stuff. just look at facebook and how more and more people are putting it under
a microscope and running it through with a fine tooth comb.
again, i’m not saying all companies are gonna do something with your data.. but what i am saying is… what happens
if that company goes under? what happens if they get bought out? who’s to say what happens next?
i can go into much detail on that but this is a short post so i’m gonna get to my point already.
with the advent of the upcoming diaspora project, your data essentially becomes yours again. you have nodes set up
much like they were in hotline where you can basically share what you want and store what you want in whatever
manner works best for you.
this is in no means a rally to go and join up with diaspora.. i mean the project is still in it’s infancy and it’s a huge
undertaking to say the least. what i do hope for, though, is a melding of the two worlds into something that anyone
can use and enjoy without fear of their privacy being an issue… and if the guys working on the diaspora project can pull it off, then count me in.
man, this can’t be good..
so i got suckered into joining twitter tonight.. even though i was quite content wif brightkite (not to mention i still sorta keep up wif myspace and facebook). now, this really isn’t that bad..depending on how much i let muhself use the respective apps… however :
wif the discovery of finding out that brightkite had twitter, facebook (not using it, though) and flickr integration, micro-blogging life has just taken a turn for the worse..
i’ve spent the last 3 hours juggling street fighter 4, twitter, little big planet, brightkite and flickr.. alright, so i like me some video game time.. sigh.. unhealthiness… what the hell am i even typing right now!? i’m so tired.
i hate you when you spring forward, daylight savings time! ^_^
social studies..
If you’re anything like me, you’re curious ’bout what’s going on in the world –just not in the typical media type of way.
I prefer taking little peeks into people’s lives and more often than not, injecting a little something into their daily routine.
Maybe it’s me trying to put my mark out there on the world somehow( …i know part of it stems from watching soap opera’s with my mom on a daily basis (damn you ‘All My Children’!) In any case, I loooooove getting to know new people.
So, it’s been a personal mission of mine to create the almighty-meeting-people app. I have, in fact, already made the rules and such for what the app basically does..geez.. been thinkin’ bout this thing even before the iphone was a thought in people’s minds; however, it seems that there are many like minded people out there who’re far more advanced in programming than I.
I’ve decided for now that while i work on my programming prowess, I’ll post ’bout some of the more interesting social networking apps i’ve seen and have been using in the past month or so. As a forewarning, to get the most out of these apps it’s best to have an iphone for this (sorry ipod touch users).
Out of all three apps I’m posting ’bout today, this one is my least favorite. Now, I’m not saying it sucks the donkey but it’s really more for people who’re already friends and want to kinda keep tabs on each other. Me, personally, if I wanna get a hold of my friends that I really want to hang out with, I’ll just call them or text them. I also live in a small town. This would be super duper handy for bigger towns where there’s lots of places to go and streets to get lost in. As an afterthought they added a new feature which allows you to kinda find people in your general area… and if you find someone of interest it allows you to email them and start a conversation. Obviously, this is the part i’m interested in. Kinda annoying that it has to close the app to open up the mail client..but it is handy that you can reply to the email sent to you directly from the mail client instead of having to log back into the app. They’ve got some work to do to catch up to the other two in that department..but it is really good for what it does.
This one is dead simple to use and really damn close to what I had in mind as far as meeting new random people ^_^ . Simply put, it narrows it down to however near you want the search to go and finds people within that search radius. If you wanna message someone you simply go to their profile and msg away.. One of the neater features is the “new” tab… this shows the latest entries who’ve just made accounts.. this is great ‘cuz frankly, the number of iphone users in this small town who use this app are few and far between. Obviously, the downside to this is that if you ever plan of seeing any of the people you meet on here, chances are they’re not gonna be anywhere near you unless of course, they happen to fall in the “near” tab. Unlike loopt, you can message directly from within the client.. but if you ever want to be notified of any messages you have, you’ll have to log into the app ‘cuz it, for some reason, doesn’t support email or text msging as a notifier (even though it asks you for your email so that it can notify you.. weird.)

What can I say ’bout this one… ummm.. it friggin’ rules! For starters, it’s got the whole integrated everything. Wanna take a picture and post it? Check. Wanna message someone from within the client? Check. Wanna get notified vie e-mail or SMS if you got an update or msg from someone? Check. Wanna see who’s in the area or from any distance? Check. I’d go so far as to say that is this the ultimate micro blogging social awesomeneering app i’ve come across. These guys did their homework and have really come through with something I find myself using everyd–every second of the day LOL >_< i think i’ve said enough.
oh btw, today is national BKBD. muh new found friend, Charlize, posted a random motivational picture involving boobs and started a wonderful day of boob looking and randomness amongst fellow brightkiters. happy brightkite boob day, everyone!

some awesomeness and not so awesomeness
First off let me just say, yes I know paying for fart app is in fact stupid. However, if I’m gonna shell out $.99 for an app it should be pretty decent. Atomic Fart blows. All the farts sound the same, and when i think of the awesometacular that my 99 pennies could have provided me, I am saddened.
Now that I have gotten that out of the way, I can continue with a less sucky app. PhotoSwap. The basis is you take a picture and it gets randomly sent to another photoswap user. In return you get a picture from a different random photoswap user. From this point you can a) reply to the picture with another picture and have a conversation via photos or b) ignore it and send a new picture all over again. It’s pretty fun because you have to take pictures in real time and cant save any pictures you receive. The is also an option to have a user name and location which will be sent out with each picture you take. Beware though there is a downside: crotch shots, and lots of them. Luckily there is also a report button for just such an occasion.
ipod touch as a phone..
.. well i nunno how new it is, really.. but like i’m super stoked to have found this out.. apparently you can use the iphones stock headsets on a 2nd gen ipod touch with apps like fring and truphone. i’m sure there are others…but those’re the ones i’ve tested on so far.. yes, this means the mic part of the headset actually works..
…obviously it’s not a replacement, in any way, for an iphone.. since i still lack the camera portion, the gps, the bluetooth.. you know.. all those nifty things…oh and you need to be at a wireless access point, which we’re sorely lacking here..sigh. anyway, you get the idea.. here’s more words :
very minor delay on either but that’s no different than using it directly from your computer. there was one strange thing wif truphone.. it, for some reason, made my voice sound like an alien… hard to explain.. next time i’ll record it so you can hear the strangeness.. it sounded fine on the other end..just weird on my end.. there’s something disconcerting ’bout hearing yourself sound like an alien while you’re talking. ^_^
i’m sure i’ve made my point. more importantly : the wordpress app from the app store is broken. this makes me sad. i’m all about bringing my laptop places..i could’ve written this using my touch solely, but i can’t post pics.. cuz the code gets all jumbled up and it doesn’t post right. wait. i didn’t post any pics this time. well crap. haha ah well.
